Air + smoke

How to understand a wildfire smoke outlook

Keep smoke overhead, modeled transport, active fires, and breathing-level air quality in their proper roles.

Planning guidance, not a guarantee. Conditions can vary within a forecast area. Follow current official instructions and use local judgment for your route, equipment, health, and surroundings.

Separate the plume from the air you breathe

NOAA satellite products identify smoke in the atmosphere. HRRR-Smoke models transport. Neither is a personal exposure measurement, so ground-level regulatory observations remain a separate signal.

A nearby fire is context, not a dose

Fire location and perimeter data can explain a source, but distance alone does not establish smoke concentration, evacuation status, road access, or fire behavior at your location.

Expect uncertainty to change

Smoke forecasts depend on emissions, fire behavior, wind, vertical mixing, and model timing. Recheck near the planned activity and follow emergency instructions.
